Hi Valerie,

We at Historic Speedwell have been running scout programs for a few years now, to varying success.

As someone else on the list mentioned, Boy and Girl Scouts are two very different animals.  The first thing I would suggest is contacting your local councils.  They are a great way to stay up to date on how the councils (particularly GSA) are changing, when and how the requirements are changing, and are an invaluable tool for marketing.

As for our specific programs:

·         For GSA, we run monthly badge days for Juniors and I.P. days for cadets and seniors (a different badge/I.P. each month).  We also are available on weekday afternoons for troops to come and do all or some of the requirements to fulfill some of the badges.

·         For BSA, we’ve had the most success with marketing some of our regular programming (Dig It! Archaeology for Kids, Junior Engineer Day, Open Hearth Cooking workshops, etc) as bookable programs for specific troops.  For example, we may have Dig It! on the public programs calendar for June 1, but a troop may want to come in and do that program for only their troop on June 2.  We’ve also had a lot of success with being a setting for Eagle scout projects.  Thus far, Eagle Scouts have landscaped our pond (with non-invasive and goose resistant plants) and built us outdoor benches and picnic tables.

Hope this helps.

If you have any other questions, comments, or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me via the methods listed below.
