Dear Gemmers -

you may remember the project Adopt-a-Museum, which I introduced last year. It's aim was (and is) to put some of the unsung heroes of the museum world in to the spotlight. The project takes the form of a blog, which each week introduces a new museum 'adopted' by a different person. The cities and countries featured are determined entirely by the participants and the museums that they choose. Here's a link to the blog: http://adopt.museum140.com

We recently featured museum no.25, which was a bit of a milestone on our way to featuring 100 museums, but we're still looking for new people to take part. If you know of a little gem of a museum, whether it's your local museum down the road or a 'not in the guide book' treasure you discovered on holiday, that you would like to 'adopt', please get in touch and we'll send you the questionnaire with 5 short questions to complete. We usually feature the museums in the order we receive the questionnaires back (with some exceptions), and usually the questionnaires are a lot slower coming back than we send them out, so so far no one has had to wait for long until they feature.

There are just 3 simple guidelines:

1. You can't adopt a museum you currently work or volunteer at (otherwise everyone would adopt themselves, which is not the point of the project).

2. You need to have visited at least once, even if it's on holiday some place you're never going back to (it doesn't have to be a museum from where you live), as we feel you can't be an advocate for something you've never seen.

3. You can't adopt a museum that's already really well known (so no Louvre, British Museum etc)

At the end of last year we also introduced our new 'I adopted a museum' stickers, which everyone who takes part receives as a wee thank you (and which have been described as one participant as "better than a Blue Peter badge"^^) There's a picture of them on the Adopt-a-Museum blog (see link above) on the About page.

We also use an online survey form to collect evaluations from teachers. The part we love the most is that we don’t have to have our volunteers/interns/ourselves type information from handwritten evaluations onto a computer. Its saves us loads of time.

We hand the teacher a half-sheet of paper with the website address for the survey as they leave the museum after the program. In addition for those who we have email addresses we send them an email reminder about a week after their visit.

As a Boy Scout leader, any patches that are not merit badges or officially from BSA/or your local council can not be worn on the uniform.
Special events, such as Camporees or Council sponsored event like a Zoo Day, Merit Badge Conference, etc., are commemorated with hanging badges that have a loop to hang temporarily from the uniform pocket button on the right hand side. You will would have to get council approval first and then they can help you work with the official BSA supplier.

The Faculty of Information, more commonly known as the iSchool, at the University of Toronto invites applications in the area of Museum Studies at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. The appointment will commence on July 1,2012.

The Faculty seeks candidates with excellent research and teaching abilities and a commitment to shaping the future of the Faculty and scholarship in the fields of museum studies/museology, and heritage studies. The Faculty invites applications from scholars with active research in one or more of the following areas: (i) in museum studies/museology as a field of study; (ii) museum education; (iii) museums and communities; (iv) museum communication, interpretation, and meaning making; (v) collections management; and (vi) museums, information, and communication technology.

The iSchool at the University of Toronto educates the next generation of professional and academic leaders in Information to transformsociety through collaboration, innovation and knowledge creation. Museums and heritage form a central role in culture and social development both locally and internationally and their advanced academic and applied study is essential. The Faculty recognizes that the field of museums and heritage, as well as its role and involvement in society, is dynamically evolving, contributing to the development of new forms of social engagement and cultural action. In parallel, the Faculty also studies society's information practices as they are being reconfigured and transformed by material shifts in information infrastructures and by political and cultural shifts in our attitudes toward information as a social phenomenon.

Applicants must have a PhD (or equivalent), a proven record of excellence in scholarship, experience with multidisciplinary research, and superior teaching experience. Applicants are expected to be able to demonstrate a history of professional engagement with the museum sector. Applicants applying at the Associate Professor level are expected to have experience leading research projects and working with graduate students. Experience developing Museum Studies/Museological (and related) curricula and new courses are an asset. Rank and salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Applicants should submit curriculum vitae, teaching dossier (including statement of teaching philosophy), copies of three representative papers/publications, and a statement outlining current and future research interests. Applicants should also arrange to have three letters of reference sent, under separate cover, to the Dean at the address listed below.

We are in our second year of collecting teacher/tour evaluations through surveymonkey.com and are pleased with our result. The response rate increased significantly. As teachers pass through our education area on their tour, we collect their email addresses and send them a link to the evaluation within the following week. You could also collect the teachers emails as they book their tour.

We used to distribute them as school groups arrived for their tour, but like you, we received few back.

[talk] Word cloud for exhibit

We have used word clouds in a variety of ways-from strategic planning to workshops. We have not used world clouds in an exhibition. I can imagine using word clouds as a fun learning assessment tool in pre-post type of setting—words visitors associate with Barbara Fritchie before exploring the exhibition and the words they associate with Fritchie after exploring your exhibition. Have fun!
