[talk] Clipboard Storage

We are working to clean-up our Admissions area and streamline storage in the small space. �One of our roadblocks is finding a way to successfully store clipboards for our museum's scavenger hunt on a 1.5"-2" countertop. �Currently we stand them up, but they fall over when we take any away.�

Does anyone have a good storage suggestion?

The upcoming May issue of MUSEUM EDUCATION MONITOR will focus on
ART-related museum education research, interpretation, evaluation, and
professional resources in museums, galleries, historic sites, science
centres, parks, zoos, aquaria and other sites of informal learning.
Projects in past years have described work in art history, art therapy,
the visual arts, community arts, art-based research, and just about
anything related to art and/or art museums!

To assist these research efforts, MEM continues to offer a free

flipping Bloom's Taxonomy on its head.

[talk] RE: career fair

We participated at a recent job fair for students at title one schools.� This was not a recruitment fair but a fair to open the kids eyes to the different kinds a careers available if they stayed in school (graduate from HS).
Our 3 part board featured, in the middle, information about our site, on the left and right panels labeled photos of our younger staff members (in some instances college age volunteers posing as staff) in the various positions.� We made sure to show both visitor contact positions and behind the scenes jobs. Staff who attended the fair talked about the different jobs and education required if the kids aspired to work in the museum field. We felt it was important not focus on our mission and how we accomplish it but the positions in the organization that are necessary to implement it.�

I believe the Tenement Museum used to - and still may - require all staff to be able to lead a tour and they are/were required to do so monthly. You might want to contact Miriam Bader there, mbader@tenement.org to see if the policy is still in place and how they structure it.

So nice to see other museums are interested in this too!

With the opening of “Connecting Cultures: A World in Brooklyn” our director, Arnold Lehman was the first to staff our “Connector” position in the exhibition – each non-union staff person in the building is required to sign up for a 2-hour shift every two months as a way to connect to our visitors. We have an Eyes and Ear page on Yammer (like Facebook for companies) to share our observations. So far so good!

I LOVE this idea and would love to implement it here. More than 10 years ago when I had a summer internship at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, they had just gotten a new director, and he was instituting a policy that every staff member would have to spend at least one hour in the galleries as a guard. I heard grumbling, but even at that tender age, knew it was good stuff.

One thing we’ve been doing is some casual visitor tracking studies. I have college students watch how groups of people move through an exhibition and time how long they spend at each artwork and label. (They carry a printed map of the galleries with artwork locations labeled and a stop watch, and simply write on the paper time spent and path taken.) Perhaps this could be a task that helps focus staff time in the galleries and helps them contribute to a larger project. It also might open curators’ eyes to how the public *actually* interacts with their exhibitions.

The one similar “program” that we implemented was during a special exhibition when we had extra traffic and needed an upper-level staff member on site on the weekends to help wrangle volunteers. Since I was the default volunteer manager, I asked the director to implement this, and she agreed, so it had to come from the top like that for certain staff members to play nice. There were still some who weaseled their way out of it, or came in very late and thereby made the process more difficult for me.

So, I think the introduction of the idea has to come from the director, and then he/she can pass it over to you for the coordination/implementation. There also needs to be a way for you to communicate with the director if staff aren’t being cooperative so he/she can put the pressure on. There could be some small incentive, like a pizza party (childish, I know, but food is a great motivator) or even free exhibition T-shirts (which would be good for people to wear in the galleries.)

One or two hours really isn’t that much to ask.

Let us know how this goes! It inspires me to try and get our full-time staff into the galleries.
