Hello,

We are a small historic house museum that would like our website to
feature interactives such as games and avatars. Can anyone provide the
contact information for consultants who specialize in this type of
web design?

Thank you,

Linda,

I work with students in our History/Museum Studies program
on a daily basis. I work with student volunteers, interns, work study students,
T.A.s, and students doing independent studies I’ve added my answers
at the end of your questions.

What
is the average length of service for the students? Students usually volunteer
one semester (about 4 months) and then receive a certificate for their hours.
If they decide to volunteer the following semester and I know before the
current semester is finished, we wait to lump all of the volunteer hours from
both semesters on the certificate.

Do they receive academic credit? The students are required to volunteer at
museums as part of the Museum Studies program. So, they don’t receive
formal academic credit hours unless they are interning, but not volunteering
can make a difference in the grade they receive in their museum studies
classes.

How often are the training sessions? I do one training session at the beginning
of the semester and then individual training on projects they are assigned to.
Our museum is pretty small, though, so larger museums may do more training.

Do you work primarily with graduate or undergraduate students? Both.

Do you have a “traditional” docent corps as well? No. As I
mentioned above, our museum is very small, and our museum is actually pretty
geared to providing experience for the students in the Museum Studies program.

Do the student docents tour selected exhibitions and only parts of the
collection or do they tour the entire museum? In our case, it is the entire
museum. The students have to become familiar with the exhibits as part of their
introduction to the museum. They are also given tour guide information if they
are to do tours.

I hope this
helps. We are a pretty small operation, but we try to give the students as much
training as we can.

I would like to hear from those of you who work in a museum
or gallery connected with a college or university and have a student docent
program.

Dear Museum-Ed Colleagues-

I just wanted to extend an invitation to the listserv to participate in IMLS new wiki, UpNext: The Future of Museums and Libraries. The wiki launched this past Wednesday, and will continue with new discussion topics every two weeks until May 12th. You can view the wiki and register to participate at http://imlsupnext.wikispaces.com. Additional information is available below and at http://www.imls.gov/news/2010/022410.shtm.

Thanks and hope you'll join us in this new project!

Erica Pastore-epastore@imls.gov
Program Analyst
Institute of Museum and Library Services

Please join us in creating a resource to guide thinking about the future of libraries and museums! From March 3rd until May 12th, 2010, IMLS will be encouraging dialogue about the big challenges and opportunities facing libraries and museums through UpNext: The Future of Museums and Libraries Wiki. You are invited to participate in this collaborative space to share your voice and expertise.

In these tough economic times, strategic thinking is a wise investment in the future. Whether you work in, partner with, study, volunteer, visit or are just plain interested in museums and libraries and passionate about how they can continue to thrive in their service to the publicyou have an opinion to be shared!

The wiki will be an opportunity to share resources, examples of what works, and vexing questions. We hope that it will be a thought provoking ten weeks for all participants and provide food for thought for your career, your institution and the choices you face.

The Vision:
A collaborative resource based on The Future of Museums and Libraries: A Discussion Guide, (http://www.imls.gov/pdf/DiscussionGuide.pdf ) that is available and used by others across the museum and library fields to continue to stimulate discussion and share knowledge about planning, enhancing, enriching and sustaining the future of museums and libraries in the 21st century.

The Goals for this wiki:
	Share ideas, resources and projects that help libraries and museums plan for the future and take action;
	Encourage cross disciplinary conversation and engage experts as well as emerging professionals;
	Use a 2.0 communications strategy to engage citizens in government;
	Provide IMLS with input to consider for its strategic plan and to inform future IMLS research, publications, convening and grant making.
