The Museum Studies & Reference Library (MS&RL) is one of the largest sources of information, and bibliographic services available to museum professionals and researchers in the United States. MS&RL is a library with information resources on museums and all aspects of museum operations, and with comprehensive reference collection to support scholarly research in Institution programs. One of 20 branches of the Smithsonian Institution Libraries, MS&RL was established in 2002. MSRL combines collections formerly known as the Museum Reference Center and the Central Reference & Loan Services.

The Museum Studies Bibliographies contains bibliographic citations to information on the role and function, history and philosophy, and nature and structure of museums. Much of this information, drawn from all disciplines and functional perspectives, is contained in materials that are difficult to discover or appear in under-utilized formats.
Citations in the database include over 1,500 theses and dissertations written in English at universities worldwide, 35 years of articles indexed from the American Law Institute -American Bar Association (ALI-ABA) Proceedings and Course of Study in Museum Administration, 30 years of articles from the Journal of Museum Education (JME), and audiotapes of the past twelve years of the American Association of Museums (AAM) Annual Meeting sessions.

Museum Learning Collaborative

The Museum Learning Collaborative (MLC), funded by a consortium of public agencies under the direction of the Institute for Museum and Library Services, has been established to further theoretically driven research on learning in museums. This nationwide project includes a core set of researchers and museums working together to develop a common research agenda. The Museum Collaborative has established a Technical Report series to share our work with the field. You can download copies of these reports and other articles produced by members of the Museum Learning Collaborative.

Informal Science

The purpose of Informal Science is to promote and advance the field of informal learning in science and other domains. This site is a place to share knowledge through interactive searches of references of research literature on informal learning in museums, on the web, and beyond. Informal Science is being developed by the University of Pittsburgh's Center for Learning in Out of School Environments (UPCLOSE) at the Learning Research and Development Center.

Every type of museum is represented by the more than 3,100 institutional members, including art, history, science, military and maritime, and youth museums, as well as aquariums, zoos, botanical gardens, arboretums, historic sites, and science and technology centers.
