RE: Free Return Visit Program

September 23rd 2026 PDT

Hello, This past year, we started giving Bounce Back passes to all school children who visit the museum for a field trip.  Each pass gives the child, two adults and their younger siblings free admission to the museum, with an expiration date (fall semester expires 6/30/27) .  We count out the passes ahead of the field trip, assign each group their own unique number, and keep track of them on a spread sheet. (we handwrite the group number and expiration date on each pass!) When a pass is used, our admissio ...Continue Reading

Re: Museum security staff question

September 14th 2026 PDT

Hi Adam.I managed the Guggenheim’s Gallery Guide program (another longstanding version of this approach to the job) for about 5 years. Ours involved a collaboration across the Education and Security departments that was a model I found very helpful.I’m now consulting with museums on how to address uncertainty and change, and a lot of the work I’ve done has been shifting from an existing, long-standing mode of operations to something new.Happy to talk if you’d like to email me directly or schedule a free call (see ...Continue Reading

Re: Museum security staff question

Hi Adam,I led the transition of a security-focused staff to using a visitor-friendly education "host" model at the ICA Boston more than 15 years ago, one of the early models of this shift, and I still hear it referenced in the field today. Since then I've done a fair amount of hands-on work building out training models that hold both protection and hospitality. I'd love to talk shop when you've the time. Krista*Krista Kusuma, MA, CPCC, ACC (she/her)*Culture Architect | Leadership Coaching & Cult ...Continue Reading

Museum security staff question

September 11th 2026 PDT

I’m interested in learning more about how different museums approach hiring and training security officers, especially at university museums. My museum currently contracts with an outside security company, but I’ve seen other models where museums have transitioned to gallery attendants/ambassadors, who focus both on protecting the collection and engaging with visitors. I’m also looking for examples of successful approaches for making visitors feel less policed by security in gallery spaces, even if it’s just as si ...Continue Reading
